The Ins and Outs of Applying for College

Congratulations!

You've made an exciting decision to continue learning even after you have your high-school diploma in hand. There are so many options when it comes to applying for college - where to apply, how to gather documents college need for applications, organizing deadlines, and then making sure you can cover the cost of attending schools. This page is designed to help you navigate this process.

Step 1: Decide where you want to apply

For the most part, colleges will either be two-year colleges, or four year colleges. There are several differences between the two types of colleges, as well as vocational and technical schools that prepare you for a specific career path. Keep in mind that getting into college can be competitive, so it doesn't hurt to apply to more than one campus.

Deciding where to apply to college can be a difficult process to begin. Click on each of the options below to view colleges in Missouri that fit this criteria.

Step 2: Organize your deadlines

All schools are going to require specific documents in order to apply for admission. On top of that, you'll need to be ready to supply your high school Grade Point Average (GPA), and standardized test scores. While standardized tests like the ACT and SAT are usually optional, some colleges require you to take at least one, and higher scores on those tests increase your changes for getting admitted, and for qualifying for financial aid.

Almost all colleges will ask for the following:

  • Completed application form

  • Personal information like a phone number, home address, and email address

  • Proof of residency like a driver's license, birth certificate, or Social Security Number

  • Paid application fee or fee waiver (if you aren't able to cover the cost of the application, talk to your school counselor!)

  • Copy of your high school transcript showing your grades and classes

  • Standardized test scores like the ACT or SAT

  • Resumé showing your work experience, volunteer hours, academic achievements, honors, and/or extracurricular activities

  • Personal Statement or Essay that reflects your interest in the school, your goals, or a response to a prompt they provide

  • Letter of Recommendation that have been written by a teacher, counselor, or community member who can speak to your character

  • Financial Aid Documents. It's very, very important to fill out a FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to learn about what kind of financial assistance and scholarship that you're eligible for. For Missouri, the priority consideration deadline is Feb. 3, 2025. Remaining applications are accepted through April 1st by midnight Central Time.

Once you've gathered your materials, make sure that you know about application deadlines.

You'll want to make sure that you have scheduled your standardized tests before those deadlines, as it can take several weeks for your scores to arrive.

Step 3: Research and Apply for Financial Aid

There are all kinds of opportunities to receive funding for college.
